We stumble and groan our way through the best and wildest survival horror series in games

The best Resident Evil  games ranked

The most underrated game in the series. It embraces Resi 4's overwhelming combat scenarios and expressive arsenal, then chucks it in a B-move Resi best-of on a wacky prison island.

6. Resident Evil: Revelations 2

Year: 2015

A landmark sequel that helped broaden Resi's horizons, shifting the action away from the original's mansion setting. The notion of escaping a city that was collapsing around you gave players the perfect sense of dramatic impetus.

5. Resident Evil 2

Year: 1998 (PC, 1999)

This remake evokes nostalgia for Resi 2's locations and charactes, but feels like a totally new game. Shooting chunks of flesh off properly nasty zombies is a gory treat, and gunplay is sharp throughout.

4. Resident Evil 2 (Remake)

Year: 2019

A bold reboot that won over critics and fans thanks to its thoroughly unpleasant bayou setting. Creating a supporting cast that's so instantly, disgustingly iconic as the Baker family is no mean feat.

3. Resident Evil 7

Year: 2017

A stellar remake that shines thanks to its goofy yet horrifying setting. The pre-rendered halls of Spencer Mansion are a chilling place to lose yourself in, and this breed of old school survival horror remains endearingly fussy.

2. Resident Evil HD Remaster

Year: 2002 (PC, 2015)

This might be the most masterfully paced action game ever created. There are so many clever ideas in Resi 4 that make fleeting appearances, before being cycled out for others. And those reload animations? Hot. Damn.
