Celebrating the best PC games of last year.

Game of the Year Awards 2020

Probably the most consistently excellent MMO we've ever played. Since re-launching in 2013, its updates and expansions have been on an upward trajectory, adding compelling new dungeons and satisfying endgame raids.

BEST ONGOING GAME

Final Fantasy XIV

A grand, pleasingly accessible strategy behemoth. Whether you want to manage smallholdings in West Africa or take some Vikings to Asia, it's all about the members of your court. Jealous knights, torture-obsessed spouses, kids who keep getting eaten by bears—they're all maddening and wonderful.

BEST STRATEGY GAME

Crusader Kings 3

The most thrilling shooter of 2020 is so intense, you could fill a bathtub with the amount of palm sweat it will milk from your grubby paws. An endless conveyor belt of drum-tight shootouts make this one of the most effectively paced FPS games in years.

BEST FPS

Doom Eternal

How did Ubisoft make Valhalla the finest Assassin's Creed game to date? By listening to fan feedback from 2018's AC Odyssey. The viking adventure is a much more inviting RPG than its predecessor, ditching level-gating and refining previously fussy combat.

BEST RPG

Assassin's Creed Valhalla

A dungeon crawler that gives the gods of ancient Greece action and attitude, all encased in Supergiant's gorgeous signature art style. The most impressive thing about Hades? It manages to make failure fun.

BEST ACTION GAME

Hades

The best looking VR game ever made is an adventure filled with stop-and-stare moments. From the first Strider stepping over your head to that shocking post-credits scene, Alyx is as compelling an advert for VR as you're ever likely to see.

BEST VR GAME

Half-Life: Alyx

Even after logging thousands of virtual flights, this sim has lost none of its power to astound. Its to-scale rendition of Earth is an astonishing technical achievement, and being able to fly to all corners of the globe makes it the ideal game to enjoy in a pandemic-ravaged world.

BEST INNOVATION

Microsoft Flight Simulator

One of the best games about getting from point A to point B there's ever been. This is a game of logistics and physics, where each of Normie's legs is given the same attention that SCS Software gives to the 18 tires on a semi-truck. A gorgeous excerise in isolation and serenity.

GAME OF THE YEAR

Death Stranding
